I'm Kevin Ligabue, and heavy blackwork is at the center of what I do at Future Ink in Oakland, California. Bold, solid black, big shapes and high contrast — that's the language I work in, whether it's abstract, cyberpunk-influenced or built from Japanese pattern. I take on large-scale pieces for clients across the Bay Area.

What is heavy blackwork?

Heavy blackwork is tattooing built around large areas of solid black and strong, graphic contrast. It ranges from bold abstract shapes and cyberpunk-inspired designs to dense pattern and texture. It sits between fine pattern work and full blackout — more graphic and high-impact than line tattooing, but more designed and varied than a pure solid-black blackout.

My style

My heavy blackwork leans abstract and cyberpunk, often blended with suminagashi marbling and Japanese geometry for texture and movement inside the black. I design every piece custom and build it to flow with your body, using contrast between dense black and open skin to make the design read from across the room.

Blast-overs and cover-ups

Heavy black is one of the best tools for reworking old tattoos. A blast-over lays new heavy blackwork or pattern straight over existing ink, and solid black sections can cover work you want gone. Send me a photo of what you've got and I'll tell you honestly what's possible.

What to expect

We plan the piece at a consultation, in person or by DM — design, placement, scale and number of sessions. Large heavy-blackwork pieces are tattooed across multiple appointments to keep saturation even and protect the skin. You'll get full aftercare and can reach me between sessions while you heal.

• What's the difference between heavy blackwork and a blackout tattoo?
  Blackout is solid black filling a whole area edge to edge. Heavy blackwork uses large areas of black but as part of a design — shapes, pattern and contrast — rather than total coverage. Many pieces combine both.
   

• Can heavy blackwork cover old tattoos?
  Often, yes — through a blast-over (new work over the old) or solid black sections. Send a photo and I'll assess it.
   

• How many sessions does a heavy blackwork sleeve take?
  It depends on size and density, but large pieces run across several sessions. I map out a plan at your consultation.
   

• Do you only tattoo custom designs?
  Yes. Every heavy blackwork piece is drawn specifically for you.
